Memberships help fuel MCD’s free MakeArt programs in the museum and throughout the community, reaching over 200,000 people each year. In return, Members enjoy free museum admission for themselves and a guest, discounts in MCD’s award-winning store, and invites to members-only events and exhibition openings. Members also receive discounted rates for MCD programs and workshops such as MAKE and MakeArt Labs, and reciprocal admission at over 1,000 museums worldwide (Enthusiast level and above). Digital Membership Cards
The Museum of Craft and Design offers digital membership cards which can be downloaded and saved to your digital wallet on your smartphone. As part of the Green Museum Accord, MCD is proud to offer a more environmentally friendly alternative to plastic membership cards. Digital cards mean our members always have access to their membership information while helping us keep your museum experience as low-touch as possible.
What are digital membership cards?
As of May 2021, the Museum of Craft and Design now offers digital membership cards which can be downloaded and saved to your smartphone. As part of the Green Museum Accord, MCD is proud to offer a more environmentally friendly alternative to plastic membership cards. Digital cards mean our members always have access to their membership information while reducing administrative costs and helping us to keep your museum experience as low-touch as possible.
How and when will I receive my digital membership card?
After joining or renewing your MCD membership, you will receive an email within a week with a link and instructions on how to download your card. Please make sure that your email address is up to date by contacting us at membership@sfmcd.org.
How do I add the membership card to my iPhone?
Access the email from your smartphone and click the “Download” button, then click “Add to Wallet” and “Add.” The card will automatically go to your iPhone’s Apple Wallet. It can be accessed in your Wallet at any time. View an instructional video for adding to iPhone here.
How do I add the membership card to my Android phone?
Android users need to download Wallet Passes from Google Play. After you have the app, access the email from your smartphone and click “Download” in the membership email, and the card will automatically go to your Wallet Passes app, where it can be accessed at any time.
How can I view the back of my membership card?
The back of your card contains information about your membership benefits, links to reserve tickets and renew your membership, and contact information.
To view the back of your card on an iPhone, select the three dots in the top right corner of your screen.
To view the back of your card on an Android, tab the ‘i’ button in the lower right corner of your screen.
I’d prefer not to use this digital membership card, what should I do?
We are permanently phasing out our plastic physical cards to offer a more environmentally friendly alternative. If you wish not to switch to digital cards, our admission staff will be able to search for your record in our database and identify that you are an active member to continue to access your benefits such as free admission and store discounts. If you previously had a plastic membership card from MCD, you can present that, or you can present a valid photo ID.
For Enthusiast level ($150) members and higher who prefer a physical a card to access their reciprocal benefits such as NARM and ROAM, please contact our membership team at membership@sfmcd.org. A small processing fee of $5 may apply.

My family member is on this membership account also, how can they receive the card?
If you have a secondary member on your membership, they will also receive a digital card. Please make sure to provide the email for your secondary member when joining or renewing. If we do not have a unique email for the second member, the primary member will receive two emails containing each card. To share the second member’s card, either forward the email addressed to them to their email address, or use the following instructions to share their card with them:
- Android
Navigate to the back of the card (tap on the small “i” on the front) and use the “Share Pass” button to send the card to your secondary member. - iPhone
Navigate to the back of the card (tap on the “…” button on the front), then tap on the share icon at the top right to send the card to your secondary member.
If you are an iPhone user, you will find the share icon at the top right on the back of the card.
I downloaded my card but I can’t find it.
If you have an iPhone, the card will automatically download to Apple Wallet. Check the app for your new card (scroll through any cards that are already there–it may be hiding!). If you have an Android, you’ll need to download Wallet Passes from the Play Store prior to downloading the card.
