Inviting visitors to explore the mysteries of the cosmos through the transformative lens of craft\, the exhibition unfolds like an archaeological dig into an imagined past. Curious faux-historical artifacts\, predominantly fashioned from clay\, evoke the excavation of a long-lost civilization. Visitors will encounter reinterpreted “telescopes” crafted from elements reminiscent of Greek amphorae and classical statuary\, alongside other relics such as crocodile skulls\, warrior gear\, and early technologies. These pieces collectively suggest an origin story where the very substance of Earth\, clay\, becomes a metaphor for both creation and cosmic exploration. \n  \nBeau McCall: Buttons On!\nButtons On! marks the West Coast debut of the first-ever retrospective showcasing the extraordinary career of artist Beau McCall. Known for his innovative wearable and visual art\, McCall hand-sews buttons onto mostly upcycled fabrics\, materials\, and objects. This exhibition presents highlights from McCall’s nearly forty-year career\, including the debut of new works and select archival pieces. \nVisitors will experience McCall’s embellished wearable art\, including jackets\, durags\, vests\, and jewelry; contemporary art pieces like a button-encrusted cast iron bathtub and a life-size Kool-Aid Man; never-before-seen archival materials; and a few select items of McCall’s button-less works that spotlight his versatility and boundless creativity. Buttons On! delves into McCall’s mastery of the button\, offering thought-provoking commentary on topics such as pop culture and social justice\, and invites visitors to experience moments of joy and personal connection through his art.[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”Full Width Line” line_thickness=”1″ divider_color=”default” custom_height=”50″][vc_row_inner column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” text_align=”left” row_position=”default” row_position_tablet=”inherit” row_position_phone=”inherit” overflow=”visible” pointer_events=”all”][vc_column_inner column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” overflow=”visible” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]\nMCD MEMBERS\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]Make the most of your MCD Membership. This participatory discussion draws inspiration from MCD’s current exhibition A Roadmap to Stardust\, an immersive exhibition featuring the work of John Roloff and Neil Forrest that explores the history of humankind as told through ceramics\, mythology\, and fictional archaeologies. It invites participants to question how our present moment will be remembered thousands of years from now. \n– Will the stories and technologies of our time become the stuff of legend?\n– What role does mythology play in our modern understanding of the past?\n– And perhaps most pressingly\, how can history inform our ideas of the future? \nPre-registration is required through SF Design Week \nThis event is part of SF Design Week. Purchase your OnePass to register for this program\, as well as a host of events and workshops across the city from June 2nd to June 10th\, 2025. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]

If you’d like to be added to the waitlist in case a spot opens up\, please email makeart@sfmcd.org* \nThe Museum of Craft and Design is proud to present a 2-session MakeArt Course led by Jeremiah Barber. Barber is a local multimedia artist\, skilled ceramicist\, and MCD’s Lead Preparator – one of the masterminds behind the installation of the museum’s changing exhibitions. \nThis MakeArt Course invites you to experiment with two wet clay processes\, glaze your work\, and walk away with two beautiful\, handmade\, and functional ceramic trays. Inspired by the terracotta artifacts of A Roadmap to Stardust\, this MakeArt Course explores the powerful world of ceramics surface design and provides behind-the-scenes insight into how the exhibition came to be installed. Come marvel at the clay work on view and build your own sensory skills with the medium. \nSession 1 | 11am-2pm\, June 14 \n– The Preparator Perspective: A Roadmap to Stardust Tour\n– Wet Clay Handbuilt Trays: Sgraffito and Texture Press\n– Delivery of works to Minnesota Street Project for Kiln Firing \nSession 2 | 11am-2pm\, June 28 \n– Glazing fired trays\n– Minnesota Street Project Studio Tour\n– Note: Work must be fired once more. Participants will need to return to the museum to pick up the finished pieces. \nPre-registration required. This MakeArt Course is currently full. If you’d like to be added to the waitlist in case a spot opens up\, please email makeart@sfmcd.org. \nClass Registration Cost:\n$250 General Admission\, $225 Students/Seniors\, $200 MCD Members\, $200 EBT/Bay Area Public School Teachers \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][divider line_type=”Full Width Line” line_thickness=”1″ divider_color=”default” custom_height=”50″][vc_row_inner column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” text_align=”left” row_position=”default” row_position_tablet=”inherit” row_position_phone=”inherit” overflow=”visible” pointer_events=”all”][vc_column_inner column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” overflow=”visible” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]\nAccessibility Accommodations\nWorkshop Accessibility: \nClay is a highly haptic medium that invites participants to create from a tactile vantage point while encouraging sensory exploration. From 12 – 4 PM\, our galleries are filled with hands-on activities allowing visitors to learn and explore the techniques\, materials\, and themes of our current exhibitions Beau McCall: Buttons On! and A Roadmap to Stardust. \nPlus\, collaboratively create a tactile touchpoint for Judith Schaechter: Super / Natural to help make this upcoming exhibition more accessible![/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]\nBeau McCall: Buttons On! Projects:\nIdentity Buttons\nStitched atop a base layer of plain buttons\, identity buttons are core to McCall’s style and imbue his beautiful wearable art with symbolism and meaning. One example is Beau’s Hood Classic: The Ice Durag (2021)\, which celebrates natural Black hair while engaging with the history of the politicization and criminalization of Black hair and hairstyles by mainstream culture. The light blue durag is covered with transparent buttons and accented by ceramic identity buttons. Made by Glaze Girl Designs\, these buttons feature Black hair products\, combs\, and hairstyles that emphasize Beau’s message. \nCreate your own identity button. What story will your unique button tell? \nButton Necklaces\nBeau knows that what we wear matters. The Button Man has been transforming buttons into wearable art for nearly forty years. His signature style of layered\, overlapping buttons is present throughout his work and reflected in these signature necklaces. \nElevate your look with your own button necklace and\, in the words of Beau himself\, ‘wreck the room! \nButton Pins\nCreate your own button-themed pin using images from the exhibition or a DIY paper button. Add flair to jackets\, bags\, or hats when you put your buttons on![/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]\nA Roadmap to Stardust Projects:\nAir Dry Clay Diffusers\nSimultaneously looking forward and back\, the Roadmap to Stardust is a fictional exploration of humanity’s history through the lens of clay. This project leverages the power of scent to evoke memories of our personal histories while encouraging everyone to get their hands clay-ey! \nConstellation Crossings\nJust what is written in the stars? Humans have always been fascinated by the night sky\, and cultures from around the world have long attributed meaning to the starry patterns visible above. Learn about the stars’ stories and create glow-in-the-dark constellation cards![/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]\nMakeArt Family Day Bonus:\nCreate a Tactile Touchpoint for Our Upcoming Exhibition\nMakeArt Family Day kicks off our MakeArt Course: Papier Mâché | From Trash to Treasure with Daniel Iturralde. Led by artist and environmental advocate Daniel Iturralde\, this community-powered workshop transforms clean trash into a papier mâché sculpture of Judith Schaechter’s Beached Whale (2018). The final sculpture will provide a tactile connection to our upcoming exhibition Judith Schaechter: Super / Natural. Haptic objects like this are an important part of museum access and inclusion\, especially for the Blind and Low-Vision community. \nJoin us during MakeArt Family Day for step one – compacting clean trash for the sculpture’s structure. Sign up for sessions 2 and 3 to finish the sculpture and gain the skills needed to continue this sustainable practice at home![/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”Full Width Line” line_thickness=”1″ divider_color=”extra-color-3″][nectar_responsive_text inherited_font_style=”default” text_direction=”default”]All activities are free with admission and Children 12 and under are always free!\nPre-registration is encouraged. \nTickets: $10 General Admission\, $8 for Students and Seniors. This conversational event will feature visual descriptions\, oral histories\, and the clitter clatter sound of buttons in motion. \nButtons On! is a treasure trove of multisensory experiences. As an almost 40-year retrospective of Beau McCall\, the exhibition not only showcases Beau’s evolving mastery of the button but also tells the story of one man who\, in the face of racism\, homophobia\, and profound loss\, has continued to meet the world with openness\, resilience\, and a desire to connect. \nThis free program is open to all. Visual descriptions and multisensory experiences are essential elements of museum access for the Blind and Low Vision community\, but they are also tools of universal design that foster connections between the exhibition and people of all backgrounds. Denim references America’s history of systemic racism\, as it was commonly worn by enslaved people forced into labor\, while its strength supports the accumulating weight of buttons. \nGet to know Beau! Participants can attend one or all three sessions. \nSession 1: Talk Trash & Build the Bones\nAugust 23\, 1 – 4 PM | Free with Admission to MakeArt Family Day \nKick things off with a thought-provoking “trash talk” circle. You’ll reflect on what we throw away and why\, while turning clean\, everyday waste—think candy wrappers and bubble wrap—into solid building blocks. These will form the inner skeleton of our collaborative sculpture. It’s a chance to connect\, create\, and reconsider your footprint\, all while helping bring the Beached Whale to life from the inside out. \nBetween Sessions 1–2\, Daniel constructs the sculpture’s armature and preps homemade papier mâché from recycled paper. \nSession 2: Sculpt with Paper & Purpose\nAugust 30\, 1 – 3 PM | Ticketed Event \nGet your hands messy as we apply layers of papier mâché to build up the whale’s body. You’ll learn to mold volume and texture\, and even start your own mini armature to take home. Bonus: you’ll leave with Daniel’s eco-friendly paper pulp recipe—perfect for future upcycled creations. \nBetween Sessions 2–3\, Daniel adds the whale’s intricate features: ghostly eyes\, sharp teeth\, and a tangled net belly. \nSession 3: Smooth & Splash On the Color\nSeptember 6\, 1 – 3 PM | Ticketed Event \nIt’s finishing day! Together\, we’ll sand and shape the surface of the sculpture\, then bring it to life with a creamy base coat and eerie\, maroon splotches. Learn basic painting techniques that add mood and depth\, and watch the whale transform into a powerful tool for accessibility during Judith Schaechter: Super/Natural. \nPre-registration is required; 20 spots are available for each session.\n \nSession 1 is included as part of our MakeArt Family Day. Please check back for a new date and time. \nInspired by the terracotta artifacts of A Roadmap to Stardust\, this MakeArt Workshop and tour explores the powerful world of clay – a highly haptic medium that invites participants to create from a tactile vantage point while encouraging sensory exploration. This event is inclusive and intended to be accessible to people with diverse abilities. Designed in partnership with the Lighthouse for the Blind\, this event may be especially inviting to the Blind and Low Vision community. \nThe workshop will kick off in the MakeArt Lab with polymer clay sculpting\, surface manipulation\, and jewelry making. While the clay bakes\, participants are invited to join a visually descriptive tour of A Roadmap to Stardust. \nPlease note that\, due to the gallery size and layout\, only four people will be permitted in the exhibition at a time. Visual descriptions will be presented in the MakeArt Lab before small individual groups tour the exhibition. \nRegistration is required. Come by for a few minutes or stay the whole time—there’s no formal agenda\, just creative freedom. Join us at the end of the workshop for an informal runway show featuring participant-made pieces! \nEverything about Beau’s practice is intentional. He beautifully uses buttons as a medium to explore systemic issues of race\, economics\, and social justice. Much of his wearable work features a denim backing—a material choice that is both symbolic and practical. Denim references America’s history of systemic racism\, once worn by enslaved people forced into labor\, while also providing the strength needed to support the accumulating weight of buttons. \nThis is a rare chance to meet and create alongside the Button Man himself and see the exhibition before it closes. All materials are provided\, but we welcome you to bring your own buttons to add a personal touch. Any unused or leftover buttons will be donated to Beau for future projects. \n  \nIn-kind support for this workshop has been generously provided by Levi Strauss & Co.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][divider line_type=”Full Width Line” line_thickness=”1″ divider_color=”default” custom_height=”50″][vc_row_inner column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” text_align=”left” row_position=”default” row_position_tablet=”inherit” row_position_phone=”inherit” overflow=”visible” pointer_events=”all”][vc_column_inner column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” overflow=”visible” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]Limited seats available\, registration highly encouraged. Moderated by Souleo – a cultural icon\, McCall’s muse\, and the curator of Buttons On! – the discussion delves into the significance of buttons\, denim\, and wearable art as well as the themes of social justice\, music\, and personal identity so vividly present in McCall’s work and Levi’s history. \nBeau McCall has worked with buttons for almost 40 years\, transforming buttons into vibrant\, narrative-rich wearable and visual art. Key to Beau’s wearable art is denim—a practical material choice capable of withstanding the weight of buttons and serving as a powerful platform to explore pop culture and social justice themes. \nTracey Panek has been with Levi’s for over a decade and now serves as the Brand Historian and Director of Archives. With deep knowledge of the company’s evolution\, she will trace Levi’s journey from its founding during San Francisco’s Gold Rush in 1853 to its influential collaborations with musicians\, artists\, and activists. \nTogether\, Beau\, Tracey\, and Souleo will explore the intersections of race\, fashion\, identity\, and art\, grounded in Beau’s dazzling and deeply personal practice. Don’t miss this mighty meeting of the minds on the closing day of Buttons On! \nVisitors can come early\, between 1-3 pm\, and create denim button brooches with Beau McCall during our Button Brooches and Levi’s Love Workshop. \nTickets: General Admission $10\, Students and Seniors $8\, MCD members FREE\nChildren 12 and under are always free. \nPre-registration encouraged. Schaechter will discuss her largest masterpiece to date\, Super/Natural\, an 8-foot-tall\, 5.5-foot-diameter dome that features 65 vibrant stained glass panels created during her residency at the Penn Center for Neuroaesthetics. \nSchaechter’s artwork is a testament to the power of craft and what’s possible when vision and mastery push the perceived limits of stained glass. Referred to herself as a “militant ornamentalist”\, Schaechter employs her signature glass engraving and layering process to create a rich world within the dome\, creating panels teeming with fantastical insects\, flora\, birds\, and beasts. By situating the viewer at the center\, Super/Natural invites contemplation of inner space\, how we experience environments neurologically and psychologically\, and outer space\, how we extend ourselves into our surroundings. \nExperience the exhibition through Schaechter’s eyes and gain deeper insight into the artistry and innovation behind her work! \nThis talk will be take place in MCD’s MakeArt Lab. Created during Schaechter’s residency at the Penn Center for Neuroaesthetics\, this central work\, along with seven additional stained-glass lightboxes\, reflects her luminous exploration of beauty\, light\, and imagination. \nWunderkammer: The Collection of Susan Beech offers a rare glimpse into one of the most remarkable private collections of contemporary art jewelry. Drawing inspiration from 18th-century cabinets of curiosity\, this exhibition features over 80 bold\, playful\, and innovative works that celebrate adornment\, storytelling\, symbolism\, and sculpture. \n  \nReserve your tickets online and get ready to explore these two new exhibitions! \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][divider line_type=”Full Width Line” line_thickness=”1″ divider_color=”default” custom_height=”50″][/vc_column][/vc_row]
