Please check back for a new date and time. \nInspired by the terracotta artifacts of A Roadmap to Stardust\, this MakeArt Workshop and tour explores the powerful world of clay – a highly haptic medium that invites participants to create from a tactile vantage point while encouraging sensory exploration. This event is inclusive and intended to be accessible to people with diverse abilities. Designed in partnership with the Lighthouse for the Blind\, this event may be especially inviting to the Blind and Low Vision community. \nThe workshop will kick off in the MakeArt Lab with polymer clay sculpting\, surface manipulation\, and jewelry making. While the clay bakes\, participants are invited to join a visually descriptive tour of A Roadmap to Stardust. \nPlease note that\, due to the gallery size and layout\, only four people will be permitted in the exhibition at a time. Visual descriptions will be presented in the MakeArt Lab before small individual groups tour the exhibition. \nRegistration is required. If you have questions\, concerns\, or access needs\, please contact us at makeart@sfmcd.org.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Come by for a few minutes or stay the whole time—there’s no formal agenda\, just creative freedom. Join us at the end of the workshop for an informal runway show featuring participant-made pieces! \nEverything about Beau’s practice is intentional. He beautifully uses buttons as a medium to explore systemic issues of race\, economics\, and social justice. Much of his wearable work features a denim backing—a material choice that is both symbolic and practical. Denim references America’s history of systemic racism\, once worn by enslaved people forced into labor\, while also providing the strength needed to support the accumulating weight of buttons. \nThis is a rare chance to meet and create alongside the Button Man himself and see the exhibition before it closes. All materials are provided\, but we welcome you to bring your own buttons to add a personal touch. Any unused or leftover buttons will be donated to Beau for future projects. \n  \nIn-kind support for this workshop has been generously provided by Levi Strauss & Co.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][divider line_type=”Full Width Line” line_thickness=”1″ divider_color=”default” custom_height=”50″][vc_row_inner column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” text_align=”left” row_position=”default” row_position_tablet=”inherit” row_position_phone=”inherit” overflow=”visible” pointer_events=”all”][vc_column_inner column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” overflow=”visible” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]Limited seats available\, registration highly encouraged. Moderated by Souleo – a cultural icon\, McCall’s muse\, and the curator of Buttons On! – the discussion delves into the significance of buttons\, denim\, and wearable art as well as the themes of social justice\, music\, and personal identity so vividly present in McCall’s work and Levi’s history. \nBeau McCall has worked with buttons for almost 40 years\, transforming buttons into vibrant\, narrative-rich wearable and visual art. Key to Beau’s wearable art is denim—a practical material choice capable of withstanding the weight of buttons and serving as a powerful platform to explore pop culture and social justice themes. \nTracey Panek has been with Levi’s for over a decade and now serves as the Brand Historian and Director of Archives. With deep knowledge of the company’s evolution\, she will trace Levi’s journey from its founding during San Francisco’s Gold Rush in 1853 to its influential collaborations with musicians\, artists\, and activists. \nTogether\, Beau\, Tracey\, and Souleo will explore the intersections of race\, fashion\, identity\, and art\, grounded in Beau’s dazzling and deeply personal practice. Don’t miss this mighty meeting of the minds on the closing day of Buttons On! \nVisitors can come early\, between 1-3 pm\, and create denim button brooches with Beau McCall during our Button Brooches and Levi’s Love Workshop. \nTickets: General Admission $10\, Students and Seniors $8\, MCD members FREE\nChildren 12 and under are always free. \nPre-registration encouraged. Schaechter will discuss her largest masterpiece to date\, Super/Natural\, an 8-foot-tall\, 5.5-foot-diameter dome that features 65 vibrant stained glass panels created during her residency at the Penn Center for Neuroaesthetics. \nSchaechter’s artwork is a testament to the power of craft and what’s possible when vision and mastery push the perceived limits of stained glass. Referred to herself as a “militant ornamentalist”\, Schaechter employs her signature glass engraving and layering process to create a rich world within the dome\, creating panels teeming with fantastical insects\, flora\, birds\, and beasts. By situating the viewer at the center\, Super/Natural invites contemplation of inner space\, how we experience environments neurologically and psychologically\, and outer space\, how we extend ourselves into our surroundings. \nExperience the exhibition through Schaechter’s eyes and gain deeper insight into the artistry and innovation behind her work! \nThis talk will be take place in MCD’s MakeArt Lab. Come by early or stay after to explore the exhibition and step into Super/Natural. \nTickets: General Admission $10\, Students and Seniors $8\, MCD members FREE\nChildren 12 and under are always free. \nPre-registration encouraged. Enjoy the sensory exploration of the clay and use it to create from a tactile vantage point. Turn shaped sculptures into necklaces\, earrings\, or keychains\, and let your wearable art speak for itself as you display it with pride. \nThis event is inclusive and intended to be accessible to people with diverse abilities. Translating to ‘chit-chat’ in Japanese\, Pecha Kucha is a fast-paced presentation format in which each speaker shows 20 slides for 20 seconds each. \nCoinciding with SF Art Week\, this Pecha Kucha asks prominent Bay Area voices to respond to ‘What does manufacturing and/or architecture mean to you’. These broad themes invite diverse perspectives and a more holistic portrayal of what architecture and manufacturing have come to mean in the Bay. Featured speakers include: \n Beth Esponnette of Unspun\nBeth Esponnette is a designer and entrepreneur known for her work at the intersection of manufacturing\, sustainability\, and product design. She is the founder of unspun\, an apparel technology company pioneering the world’s first 3D weaving system for on-demand\, zero-waste clothing production. Trained in fiber science and design\, Esponnette’s career has spanned industry\, academia\, and research\, and her work challenges conventional mass manufacturing by applying principles of circularity and biological efficiency to industrial systems. \n  \nRyan De La Hoz of SF Made\nRyan De La Hoz works at SFMade as an Engagement Manager with over a decade of experience in soft and hard good development and production\, administration\, makerspace studio management\, art education\, and creative direction. He lives in San Francisco. \n  \n  \n  \nConner Wishard of Lundberg Design\nConner Wishard is a Principal of Lundberg Design located in the Dogpatch neighborhood of SF. He has been the Director of Fabrication of their shop for over 10 years and has overseen many different scales and mediums\, from walls of honey for Charles Phan restaurants to 50’ long redwood tables for Google and one-off toilet paper holders in between. Lundberg Design is a studio that executes high-end design at many levels and a wide range of project scales. Our signature style is characterized by sculptural form\, simply\, elegantly\, and expertly executed. Our firm was founded by Olle Lundberg in 1987 and does work for clients throughout the United States. \n  \n\nJ.D. Sassaman of Stanford’s The Clubhouse for Hardware Innovation Projects\nJD Sassaman is the Executive Director of the Clubhouse for Hardware Innovation Projects (CHIP) at Stanford University’s School of Engineering. She is passionate about connecting 2D design to 3D fabrication and exploring the messy realities and complex opportunities around how our world gets built. She has designed\, launched and led hands-on innovation spaces across the country\, including Newlab Detroit\, Humanmade SF\, and Autodesk’s San Francisco Technology Center. With a Master’s in architecture and a degree in furniture craft\, she has focused on creating technical spaces that foster surprise\, connection and joy. She lives in San Francisco and is teaching her kids how to swing a hammer. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThis event is scheduled from 5-7pm. Korot helped shape the language of contemporary media through groundbreaking work that bridges video and craft practices. This special event offers audiences a rare opportunity to hear directly from this foundational artist about her practice. \nInternationally recognized for her pioneering multi-channel installations\, such as Dachau 1974 and Text and Commentary\, and for her collaborations with minimalist composer Steve Reich\, Korot helped define the field of video art at its inception. In 1970\, she co-founded Radical Software with Phyllis Gershuny and Ira Schneider\, the first periodical devoted to video art. The publication became a vital platform for artists to exchange ideas\, tools\, and technical knowledge at a moment when the medium was still emerging. Her work is held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Museum of Modern Art\, the Smithsonian American Art Museum\, and the Kramlich Collection\, among others\, and has been exhibited at The Kitchen\, Documenta\, the Whitney Museum of American Art\, the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum\, and Tate Modern. \nDeeply influenced by Korot’s work\, artist Sabrina Gschwandtner explores the interconnected histories of textile production and the moving image. Working across media\, Gschwandtner sews together discarded 16mm filmstrips into quilt-like compositions. Her process organizes fragments into patterned structures\, linking the languages of cinema and craft. In 2002\, she founded KnitKnit\, a zine exploring the intersections of traditional craft and contemporary art. Her work is held in the collections of LACMA\, the Walker Art Center\, the Smithsonian American Art Museum\, the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston\, and the RISD Museum\, among others. \nDon’t miss this across-generations conversation between two Video Craft artists\, tracing how traditions of craft continue to encode meaning within contemporary moving-image media.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text
