MAKE

June 20 @ 5:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Museum of Craft and Design

MCD knows how to party-after-hours! Join us for an evening of exhibition-inspired MakeArt projects and creatively connect with yourself and those around you.

Explore the DIY, creative reuse, and mixed media aesthetic of Indie Folk: New Art and Sounds from the Pacific Northwest. Developed in collaboration with local artists, activations include:

  • Scrappy and Salvaged Baskets | Inspired by Indie Folk artist Marita Dingus’s basket series, Ramekon O’Arwisters and Tanya Herrera enlist the art of finger crocheting to create unconventional vessels.
  • Memory Pods | Priyanka Rana makes memories tangible, inviting all to participate in creating a touchable sculpture to travel with the Mobile MakeArt van.
  • Vitreous Vessels | This project uses glass etching to give a Cappy Thompson-aesthetic to glassware donated by local businesses Souvla and Ungrafted.

Explore cobot (collaborative robot) art through Mr. Roboto MakeArt activations:

  • Cobot Calligraphy | Co-authored by Jojo Liu, this MakeArt project teaches basic Chinese calligraphy while elegantly exploring Mr. Roboto’s letterforms.
  • A Robot Made It, First | Rae Lanzerotti’s tactile, robotic translations challenge participants to reinterpret 3D-printed textiles.,
  • Tasteful Taxidermy | Make your own ‘taxidermy’ puppets as inspired by the Mr. Roboto-featured stop-motion short film Roadkill Jamboree.

Scheduled just 10 days before the exhibitions close, MAKE is the last chance to check out Indie Folk and Mr. Roboto. Don’t miss the fun and MAKE it out to MCD!

Indie Folk: New Art and Sounds from the Pacific Northwest

February 24–June 30, 2024

The Pacific Northwest is home to a unique artistic ecosystem involving craft traditions, pre-industrial cultures, and Indigenous and settler histories. Like folk art, the exhibition features handmade works that are unpretentious, and often blur the line between functionality and aesthetics.
