The Lunar New Year is a time for celebration, family, and tradition. Local artist Jojo Liu returns to the MCD MakeArt Lab to teach Chinese calligraphy and honor the Year of the Dragon with a fiery twist.

Join us and observe Jojo’s skilled hand as she masterfully demonstrates the art of Chinese Calligraphy. Following Jojo’s demonstration, attendees will try their hand at the practice and employ the tools of the trade to make a Dragon-inspired artwork that honors the zodiac sign throughout 2024.

MakeArt Lab attendees will receive Jojo Liu’s exclusive Chinese Calligraphy MakeArt Kit—an opportunity to hone their calligraphy practice all year long!

Artist Statement: Jojo Liu

My art practice is based in the rich and beautiful tradition of Chinese calligraphy. Chinese calligraphy is one of the most traditional art forms in the world and is truly representative of Eastern art and culture. My grandfather inspired and taught me to practice Chinese calligraphy from a young age, and I continue to have more love for it every day.

By introducing my experience and passion, I present a modern twist to traditional Chinese calligraphy. My work strikes a delicate balance between traditional calligraphy and art with
a personal flair.
