MCD Curator Walk-Through: Mr. Roboto

June 8 @ 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Museum of Craft and Design

SF Design Week comes to the Museum of Craft and Design! Join us as we celebrate the final month of Mr. Roboto with a deep dive into the exhibition and drop-in activations inspired by the four types of art collaboratively created by San José State University (SJSU) students and the robotic arm—live in the gallery.

Gain a deeper understanding of Mr. Roboto at MCD’s upcoming Curator Walk-Through. Guest curator Eleanor Pries will contextualize the works of Mr. Roboto, and speak on the creative practices of SJSU student cohorts—all of whom found unique ways to collaborate with a UR5 Robot Arm.

Tickets will be available soon.

MCD members FREE, Students and Seniors $10, Non-members $12
Pre-registration encouraged. Not a member? Join today!

ACTIVATIONS

Swing by the museum between 12-4pm for Mr. Roboto-inspired activations. Try your hand at Jojo Liu’s Cobot (Collaborative Robot) Calligraphy, interpret robot art from a human perspective with Rae Lanzerotti’s MakeArt project, make light rays tangible with glow-in-the-dark art, and recreate the ‘taxidermy’ puppets for your own rendition of Roadkill Jamboree.

ELEANOR PRIES

Eleanor Pries is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Design at San José State University. Trained and captivated across multiple disciplines, her research explores the legacy and destiny of civic infrastructure, hydrologic architecture, and absorptive materials.

Pries holds a BA in Visual and Environmental Studies from Harvard University, MA in Architectural History from the University of Virginia, and MArch from the University of California, Berkeley. She received the Frederick Sheldon prize fellowship and John K. Branner prize fellowship. Pries has also been practicing for over ten years; her firm engages architecture, urbanism, and strategy.

A committed educator, Pries lectured in architecture at SJSU and UC Berkeley before joining SJSU full-time in 2021. In studio, students test scalable geometries, construct tectonic “clouds”, and sculpt light effects, using digital technologies and fabrication tools.

Pries serves as an Advisory Board Ambassador to San Francisco’s Youth Art Exchange and is an avid surfer at Ocean Beach.
