Sensory Sunday
August 24 @ 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
Join us for Sensory Sunday, designed to prioritize access and inclusion for the disability community and Neurodivergent visitors, featuring hands-on activities and a relaxed exhibition exploration.
Sensory Sunday delivers the same hands-on magic, creative community connection, and exhibition exploration as our signature MakeArt Family without the crowds. This event is designed to prioritize access and inclusion in MCD’s public programs and is developed specifically for members of the disability community, including Neurodivergent visitors of all ages. Swing on by MCD to explore our current exhibitions Beau McCall: Buttons On! and A Roadmap to Stardust through the following hands-on projects.
Beau McCall: Buttons On! Projects:
Haptic Art Works
MCD commissioned Beau to create three haptic pieces that highlight his process. These intricately stitched button designs are enticing. Tactically explore these works and build a greater appreciation for the craftsmanship on display!
Identity Buttons
Stitched atop a base layer of plain buttons, identity buttons are core to McCall’s style and imbue his beautiful wearable art with symbolism and meaning. One example is Beau’s Hood Classic: The Ice Durag (2021), which celebrates natural Black hair while engaging with the history of the politicization and criminalization of Black hair and hairstyles by mainstream culture. The light blue durag is covered with transparent buttons and accented by ceramic identity buttons. Made by Glaze Girl Designs, these buttons feature Black hair products, combs, and hairstyles that emphasize Beau’s message.
A Roadmap to Stardust Projects:
Constellation Crossings
Just what is written in the stars? Humans have always been fascinated by the night sky, and cultures from around the world have long attributed meaning to the starry patterns visible above. Learn about the stars’ stories and create glow-in-the-dark constellation cards!
Sensory Sunday Notes:

– Noise-cancelling headphones (6), weighted scarves (4), and earplugs are available at the front desk.
