MCD Virtual Event • mak-‘amham: Indigenous Food Craft w/ Cafe Ohlone
February 27, 2021 @ 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM
The Museum of Craft and Design presents a conversation with Vincent Medina and Louis Trevino of mak-’amham/Cafe Ohlone. In this virtual event, they will discuss Native culture in the Bay Area and describe the particular importance of food for Ohlone reconstruction of collective identity and the preservation of ancestral traditions.
The name of the organization that Vincent and Louis run, mak-‘amham (mahk-am-haam), means “our food” in the Chochenyo Ohlone language. Chochenyo is the Native language to the Eastern shores of San Francisco Bay, the area collectively known as “the East Bay.” mak-’amham is an Ohlone cultural institution empowering the Ohlone community with tradition— teaching the public, through taste, of their unbroken roots. mak-’amham operates in Indigenous homelands; they work to revive and strengthen traditional Ohlone foods for the wellness of their people. All efforts dedicated to dietary preparation and education are founded upon a mission to fortify a reclaimed, decolonized identity. Vincent and Louis work to keep their cuisine and culture strong to honor those before them who loved these powerful foods and to have greater visibility for the Ohlone community that they are a part of.
All Cafe Ohlone food is indigenous to California, specifically to the San Francisco and Monterey Bay Area, and the primary ingredients used are foods that are recognizable and attainable in the traditional Ohlone world before contact with outside forces.
Join us to learn more about the process of creating contemporary indiginous cuisine, how the organization has redesigned their approach to community food in the face of the pandemic, and the present day realities of the Ohlone people still living on the land they have existed on for thousands of years.
