Take your lunch break with the Museum of Craft and Design. Join us on Zoom for a virtual Q&A with artist Linda Gass and MCD Assistant Curator Ariel Zaccheo. Linda’s work is installed at MCD in the exhibition Linda Gass: and then this happened…, extended through August 2, 2020.
Artist Linda Gass makes artwork using beauty to encourage people to look at hard environmental issues. Working in textile, glass and installation art, Linda’s artwork addresses the relationship between humans and the water and land that sustain them. Linda’s presentation will take you on a photographic journey to the places that inspire her artwork, from the wilderness areas of California to significant water interventions and climate change issues in the American West. Linda will share images of her artwork made in response to her experience of the landscape, her research, and the environmental implications of the interventions. She will also invite you into her studio to see how her artwork is made step-by-step from initial concept sketches to the finished artwork. In this short engaging 30-minute presentation, you will gain a new appreciation and awareness for our water resources and the impacts of climate change and how art can play an important role in educating the public. Following the presentation, Linda will answer questions from Ariel and MCD Members.

About Linda Gass:
Bay Area artist Linda Gass is best known for her labor-intensive stitched paintings. She finds inspiration in the relationship between humans and the water and land that sustain them. Her birds-eye view textiles blend painting with quilting and embroidery techniques to highlight the human marks on the landscape that affect our water resources. Each work is inspired and informed by her research into the history, scientific studies, maps, and aerial photographs of the site on which each series is based. Her goal is to inspire awareness and action for these critical subjects using beauty to make the serious and difficult nature of the subject more accessible.
Gass is a native Californian and has a studio at The Alameda Artworks in San Jose. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally including the Oakland Museum, the Bellevue Art Museum and the US Embassy in Moscow. Gass’s work has been written about in The San Francisco Chronicle, KQED, National Geographic’s All Over the Map: A Cartographic Odyssey, and American Craft, as well as other publications. She is the recipient of several awards, including the prestigious Fleishhacker Foundation Eureka Fellowship.
