In April, Atkinson started a new role as executive director of the Museum of Craft and Design in San Francisco. A smaller institution than its Smithsonian peers, the museum is a longtime anchor for San Francisco’s industrial yet rapidly changing Dogpatch neighborhood. Bloomberg CityLab spoke with Atkinson about popular design and its place in elite institutions and where MCD fits in the city.
