MCD Member Event: Behind-the-scenes with Terreform ONE

Join the Museum of Craft and Design on Zoom for a virtual discussion with Terreform ONE co-founder, Mitchell Joachim, and executive director, Vivian Kuan, in conversation with Joel Makower of GreenBiz Group, Inc. Terreform ONE’s Cricket Shelter design and research is on view at MCD in the exhibition Survival Architecture and the Art of Resilience.

In this virtual event, learn about Terreform ONE’s past and future projects, including the Bio-Informatic Digester, a living machine that utilizes mealworms to eat styrofoam packaging from e-waste, to be installed in Camden, New Jersey in April 2021. Following the discussion, the panelists will answer questions from members.

Terreform ONE [Open Network Ecology] is a nonprofit architecture and urban design research group founded in 2006 by Mitchell Joachim and Maria Aiolova. The group endeavors to combat the extinction of all planetary species through pioneering acts of design and projects that aim to illuminate the environmental possibilities of habitats, cities, and landscapes across the globe. Operating as an interdisciplinary lab of specialists advancing the practice of socio-ecological design, Terreform ONE cultivates resilience through innovations in building, transportation, infrastructure, water, food, waste treatment, air quality, and energy.

About the speakers:

Mitchell Joachim is the Co-Founder of Terreform ONE and Associate Professor of Practice at NYU. Mitchell upholds noteworthy leadership roles as a University Senator and Co-Chair of Global Design NYU. Formerly, he worked as an architect at the professional offices of Frank Gehry in Los Angeles, Moshe Safdie in Massachusetts, and I.M. Pei in New York. He has won many awards including: Fulbright Scholarship, LafargeHolcim Acknowledgement Prize, Ove Arup Foundation Grant, Architect R+D Award, AIA New York Urban Design Merit Award, Victor Papanek Social Design Award, 1st Place International Architecture Award, Zumtobel Award for Sustainability, Architizer A+ Award, History Channel Infiniti Award for City of the Future, and Time Magazine Best Invention with MIT Smart Cities. He is a TED Senior Fellow and has been awarded fellowships with Safdie Architects, and the Martin Society for Sustainability at MIT. He earned a Ph.D. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MAUD at Harvard University, M.Arch at Columbia University with honors.

Vivian Kuan is Executive Director at Terreform ONE. As an architect with an interdisciplinary background in art, architecture, entrepreneurial marketing, and startups, she is dedicated to improving the future of our environment through impactful design and education. Vivian is currently faculty at Parsons in the Strategic Design and Management graduate program.  She was a Launch Director at the incubator, idealab! and later directed the online strategy and e-commerce business units for the Estee Lauder Companies, Inc. and for The L’Oreal Group Inc. Before business school, Vivian worked as an architect and project manager in Hong Kong for Sun Hung Kai Properties, Ltd., as well as in New York City for Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates. She earned an MBA/MA at the Wharton School/Lauder program, University of Pennsylvania, and B.Arch. from Cornell University.

Joel Makower is co-founder, chairman and executive editor of GreenBiz Group Inc., producer of GreenBiz.com. For more than 30 years, Joel has been a well-respected voice on business, the environment, and the bottom line. Among his many duties at GreenBiz, Joel hosts the annual GreenBiz forums and is author of the annual State of Green Business report. In 2012, he was awarded the Hutchens Medal by the American Society for Quality, which cited “his ability to tell compelling stories that both inform and inspire business leaders toward profitable action.” In 2014, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the International Society of Sustainability Professionals. A former nationally syndicated columnist, Joel is author or co-author of more than a dozen books, including The New Grand Strategy, published in 2016. He serves as a board member or adviser to both for-profit and nonprofit organizations and speaks regularly to companies, industry groups and business schools around the world. The Associated Press has called him “The guru of green business practices.”
