The Museum of Craft and Design is proud to present Pecha Kucha: Architecture and Manufacturing in the Bay Area. Translating to ‘chit-chat’ in Japanese, Pecha Kucha is a fast-paced presentation format in which each speaker shows 20 slides for 20 seconds each.

Coinciding with SF Art Week, this Pecha Kucha asks prominent Bay Area voices to respond to ‘What does manufacturing and/or architecture mean to you’. These broad themes invite diverse perspectives and a more holistic portrayal of what architecture and manufacturing have come to mean in the Bay. Featured speakers include:

Beth Esponnette of Unspun
Beth Esponnette is a designer and entrepreneur known for her work at the intersection of manufacturing, sustainability, and product design. She is the founder of unspun, an apparel technology company pioneering the world’s first 3D weaving system for on-demand, zero-waste clothing production. Trained in fiber science and design, Esponnette’s career has spanned industry, academia, and research, and her work challenges conventional mass manufacturing by applying principles of circularity and biological efficiency to industrial systems.

Ryan De La Hoz of SF Made
Ryan De La Hoz works at SFMade as an Engagement Manager with over a decade of experience in soft and hard good development and production, administration, makerspace studio management, art education, and creative direction. He lives in San Francisco.

Conner Wishard of Lundberg Design
Conner Wishard is a Principal of Lundberg Design located in the Dogpatch neighborhood of SF. He has been the Director of Fabrication of their shop for over 10 years and has overseen many different scales and mediums, from walls of honey for Charles Phan restaurants to 50’ long redwood tables for Google and one-off toilet paper holders in between. Lundberg Design is a studio that executes high-end design at many levels and a wide range of project scales. Our signature style is characterized by sculptural form, simply, elegantly, and expertly executed. Our firm was founded by Olle Lundberg in 1987 and does work for clients throughout the United States.

J.D. Sassaman of Stanford’s The Clubhouse for Hardware Innovation Projects
JD Sassaman is the Executive Director of the Clubhouse for Hardware Innovation Projects (CHIP) at Stanford University’s School of Engineering. She is passionate about connecting 2D design to 3D fabrication and exploring the messy realities and complex opportunities around how our world gets built. She has designed, launched and led hands-on innovation spaces across the country, including Newlab Detroit, Humanmade SF, and Autodesk’s San Francisco Technology Center. With a Master’s in architecture and a degree in furniture craft, she has focused on creating technical spaces that foster surprise, connection and joy. She lives in San Francisco and is teaching her kids how to swing a hammer.
