Family MakeArt at The Bayview Opera House Tree Lighting Ceremony

Create fun Holiday-themed paper ornaments and decorations at our MakeArt activity. See us at the Annual Community Tree Lighting at the new Bayview Opera House Plaza at 3rd and Newcomb – festive music, craft vendors, food, arts activities for kids, Santa,
tree lighting at 6PM.
Family Day at the Museum of Craft and Design: Create Glass Coasters

Join us for this 3-part celebration of art glass. Tour Amber Cowan: Second-life
Glass exhibition,Watch hourly demonstrations of lampworked glass (at
Approximately: 12:15, 1:15 and 2:15). Design and create a unique glass coaster. (The coaster will be fired off-site and returned to the museum for pick-up at a later date).
Space limited to the first 75 participants so please arrive early.

Family Day Origami Craft in the Presidio: Boxes, Boats, and Butterflies

In partnership with the National Japanese American Historical Society (NJAHS).
The National Japanese American Historical Society is celebrating their 1-Year
anniversary at the historic MIS building in the Presidio, and the Museum of
Craft and Design is delighted to partner with them to celebrate. Drop in
for an origami craft activity. Learn how to make beautiful boxes, butterflies
and boats. In coordination with Wendy Maruyama: Executive Order 9066 on exhibit
at MCD, learn about the headquarters where General DeWitt orchestrated
the implementation of Executive Order 9066.
Other special tours and talks will be going on that day, as part of the anniversary
celebration.

Our July Family Day is inspired by our summer exhibition, Joe Brubaker and The Exquisite Gardeners: A Visible Transparency Project. Joe’s work has been described as “art that sparkles, shines and exists for its own sake like a three-dimensional poem.” Take a self-guided tour of the exhibitions, then make a 3D paper poetry flora using recycled books and book art techniques. Combine your family’s creations to make your own poetry garden.
Family Day is a drop-in program, and our classroom fills up quickly! To avoid
waiting, please come early or call in advance to check our crowding status.
