Family MakeArt at The Bayview Opera House Tree Lighting Ceremony

5:00pm – 7:30 pm
All ages welcome.
Create fun Holiday-themed paper ornaments and decorations at our MakeArt activity. See us at the Annual Community Tree Lighting at the new Bayview Opera House Plaza at 3rd and Newcomb – festive music, craft vendors, food, arts activities for kids, Santa,
tree lighting at 6PM.

 

Family Day at the Museum of Craft and Design: Create Glass Coasters
Saturday, November 22, 2014
12:00 pm – 3:00 pm
Free event with museum admission

Join us for this 3-part celebration of art glass. Tour Amber Cowan: Second-life
Glass exhibition,Watch hourly demonstrations of lampworked glass (at
Approximately: 12:15, 1:15 and 2:15). Design and create a unique glass coaster. (The coaster will be fired off-site and returned to the museum for pick-up at a later date).
Space limited to the first 75 participants so please arrive early.
This program was made possible by a generous grant from the Glass Alliance
of Northern California (“GLANC”)

Family Day Origami Craft in the Presidio: Boxes, Boats, and Butterflies

Admission to the MIS is free for MCD members.
Location: Military Intelligence Service Historic Learning Center,
640 Old Mason St, San Francisco, CA 94129.
In partnership with the National Japanese American Historical Society (NJAHS).
The National Japanese American Historical Society is celebrating their 1-Year
anniversary at the historic MIS building in the Presidio, and the Museum of
Craft and Design is delighted to partner with them to celebrate. Drop in
for an origami craft activity. Learn how to make beautiful boxes, butterflies
and boats. In coordination with Wendy Maruyama: Executive Order 9066 on exhibit
at MCD, learn about the headquarters where General DeWitt orchestrated
the implementation of Executive Order 9066.

Other special tours and talks will be going on that day, as part of the anniversary
celebration.

MakeArt Workshop at the Potrero Public Library: Simple Science Toys

In honor of Science Month at the Library, We’ll explore the intersection of art,
craft and Science while making some simple yet ingenious toys. The good
news is we’ll teach you the skill and you can make them at home for your friends and family.

Location: Military Intelligence Service Historic Learning Center, 640 Old Mason St, San Francisco, CA 94129.

In partnership with the National Japanese American Historical Society.

Join the Museum of Craft and Design (MCD) and the National Japanese AmericanHistorical Society (NJAHS) for a family tour of the Military Intelligence
Service Historic Learning Center and participate in an origami craft activity for

We will use a variety of found objects and repurposed materials to make
unique three dimensional works of art, ready to display in your home.
There is a long and rich tradition of using old materials in unexpected ways to create exciting new works! What will you come up with?

Family Day: Paper Poetry Garden

Our July Family Day is inspired by our summer exhibition, Joe Brubaker and The Exquisite Gardeners: A Visible Transparency Project. Joe’s work has been described as “art that sparkles, shines and exists for its own sake like a three-dimensional poem.” Take a self-guided tour of the exhibitions, then make a 3D paper poetry flora using recycled books and book art techniques. Combine your family’s creations to make your own poetry garden.
Family Day is a drop-in program, and our classroom fills up quickly! To avoid
waiting, please come early or call in advance to check our crowding status.

Reimagined Costume Jewelry Accessories

Begin this workshop with a tour of Jennifer Crupi: A Display of Gestures,
an exhibition of 15 wearable artworks in metal exploring body language
and communication. Then spend the afternoon deconstructing costume
jewelry from our treasure trove. Design, layer, and fasten the jewelry
together to create one-of-a-kind accessories. Snack provided.

Take a tour of Elevated Corrugated, a group exhibit featuring 12 artists
working exclusively with cardboard. Then get busy cutting and gluing your
way to a wild and crazy cardboard mask. Base yours off a real animal or
make up a creature. Snack will be provided.

Family Day: Cardboard Ukuleles

A drop-in workshop for families of all ages
Free with museum admission, no registration necessary

Spend the afternoon in cardboard heaven! Take your family on a self-guided tour of Elevated Corrugated, a group exhibit featuring 12 artists working exclusively with cardboard. Then work together to hand-craft a cardboard ukulele for your family. You’ll never look at cardboard the same.

 

 

Rubber Stamp Carving

Get inspired by our current exhibition Obsessive Reductive, a collection of reductive artwork created by 18 artists. Tour the gallery, then bring your creativity back to the craft Lab to learn how to carve your own rubber stamp.

Get inspired by our exhibition Jerry Takigawa: False Food. Takigawa uses plastic garbage as a theme in his photography. We’ll color, cut and melt a variety of plastics, then compose them into a striking sculpture to hang or display at home.
