JB Blunk Film Screening + Talk with Nathan Zack
December 2 @ 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Experience an evening exploring the connections between film, wood, and the intuitive nature of making.
Join us at MCD for a special talk and 16mm film screening with San Francisco-based artist Nathan Zack. Working with film, Zack embraces the limitations and unpredictability of analog filmmaking, where each frame is shaped by hand and every roll offers a finite opportunity to capture a place in time. His practice shares an affinity with Blunk’s approach to woodworking, finding beauty in the character of a material and allowing the subtractive process itself to guide the work.
Through a screening of footage filmed at Blunk’s handbuilt home in Inverness, followed by a conversation about his process, Zack invites us to look beyond the finished object and consider the gestures and decisions that bring a work into being.
TICKETS
General Admission $25, Members $15
ABOUT NATHAN ZACK
Nathan Zack is a San Francisco-based artist working at the intersection of cinema, agriculture, and education. His primary medium is 16mm film, out of a deep conviction that analog filmmaking more closely parallels the cadence of farming and that celluloid images more honestly evoke the colors, texture and spirit of land. Guided by ethnographic theory, Zack seeks to raise questions about authorship, subjecthood and voice, as well as of what it means to document a place. For Zack, film is not an end in and of itself, but rather an entry point. He has exhibited work in San Francisco, New York, Berlin and Munich.
