Join MCD and artist Linda Gass for a hands-on deep dive into current exhibition, Linda Gass: and then this happened….

Gass’s exhibition displays beautiful and legible artistic representations of sobering data that records human interaction with the natural environment. Her work uses exacting processes of silk dyeing and stitching to represent topography, urban space, and nature.

Hear more about Linda’s extensive research and unique process, sip on happy hour beverages during a creative process demo and then try your hand at silk painting based on map designs of the Dogpatch neighborhood of San Francisco.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity for creative interaction with an MCD exhibiting artist!

Curator Walk Through: Survival Architecture and the Art of Resilience

Science, technology, architecture and art converge to question the nature and purpose of survival within the context of climate change and natural disaster: How do we design and retrofit our built world to adapt to increased uncertainty and do it affordably? How do we produce dwellings that have a full life-cycle of durability pre, during and post-disaster?

In Survival Architecture and the Art of Resilience, Art Works for Change invited visionary architects and artists to consider artistically interpretive solutions and prototypes for emergency shelter in a climate-constrained world. Large-scale and portable interactive architectural installations, models, photography and drawings impress the importance and sociocultural relevance of emergency and survival housing in the age of climate change. Through invention, artistic playfulness, and innovation, artists will explore materials, technology, culture and social activism to create a pioneering exhibition.

Join guest curator Randy Jayne Rosenberg for an exhibition walk-through and conversation exploring adaptable and sustainable housing in the age of climate change.

MCD Curator Walkthrough

Join Dead Nuts: a search for the ultimate machined object guest curator David Cole for a detailed look at this remarkable collection of objects and to learn more about the process behind the exhibition’s unique development, design and execution.

Posed as a question in 2009 to an online forum called Practical Machinist, over a period of several months, a small community debated “What is the ultimate machine object/mechanism?” They proposed their favorites in an ongoing conversation of posts and responses which led to the creation of the exhibition Dead Nuts: a search for the ultimate machined object. Some objects represent the primal building blocks of mechanization: the wheel, the lever, the screw. Others are examples of tremendous complication: a Linotype machine, an aircraft engine, a microprocessor. Between these extremes are seemingly humble objects that belie their sophistication but have revolutionized the world. Our global standard of living is built upon these technologies; this exhibition attempts to elucidate what is so special about these objects and why they were proposed as the ultimate machined object/mechanism.

Free with general admission. All ages are welcome.
