On the third Thursday of each month, collaborate with artists and makers, explore unique themes and re-think materials through creative design projects. 

It’s a heavy metal summer at MCD! View Dead Nuts: a search for the ultimate machined object and explore the materials and exhibition concepts through a number of in-gallery activities. Hammer out your creativity with custom metal-stamped jewelry, design a hanging mobile from found objects, and more.

MCD Free First Tuesday: August

Take part in investigating several three-dimensional materials and processes inspired by the exhibition Dead Nuts: a search for the ultimate machined object. Create simple Plaster of Paris molds inspired by plastic injection molds, then use the process to reproduce a variety of machined objects. Make one, or make many!

MCD MakeArt Family Day: August

MCD celebrates the new exhibition Interior/Exterior with a Family Day focused on structures and place! Explore building composition by constructing a 3D mini brick structure inspired by Benjamin Armas and Ori Carino and combine simple stamped shapes into complex architectural forms. 

Upgrade your personal space with bedroom banners and hanging elements based on the art of Kathy Sirico, and design an indoor ring-toss game featuring materials and imagery found in Julie Alpert’s whimsical installation. 

PLUS: Decorate your Swag Bag and play around with large-scale blocks.

MCD Free First Tuesday: July

Shape organic, oceanic forms inspired by exhibiting artists’ Jamie Bardsley and Nathan Craven’s repeating ceramic objects. MCD artists will use paper clay to imitate the natural shapes of shells or creatures as it forms around a balloon. While your paper clay begins drying, try your hand at collage silhouettes inspired by Wanxin Zhang’s work.

MCD Community MakeArt: Sunday Streets Dogpatch/Bayview

Bike, walk, skate or scoot down to Dogpatch and enjoy FREE admission to the museum all day!  View our exhibitions, Material Domestication and Wanxin Zhang: The Long Journey, then join us in the MakeArt Lab and parklet to create festive Sunday Streets decorations for your preferred mode of transportation!

Sunday Streets connects the lively 22nd Street in Dogpatch to The Bayview’s main corridor and beyond, with a car-free route spanning Third Street from 22nd Street to Carroll Avenue and creating a safe and spacious temporary park for the community to enjoy. Walk, bike or catch the T Line (the city’s first new light rail line in more than half a century) which will run throughout the day. Design Lab Happy Hour • Rowland Ricketts Indigo

Join MCD and Slow Fiber Studios in welcoming Material Domestication artist Rowland Ricketts for this very special Design Lab Happy Hour. Participants will hear from Rowland about his creative process– from conscious indigo plant growing to hand dyeing textiles that span contemporary art and design.

Then, hear from World Shibori Network founder Yoshiko Wada, who will give a live demo of indigo vat preparation, followed by a hands-on swatch dyeing workshop.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity for creative interaction with an MCD exhibiting artist!

Light snacks and happy hour beverages provided.

Rowland Ricketts utilizes natural dyes and historical processes to create contemporary textiles that span art and design.  Trained in indigo farming and dyeing in Japan, Rowland received his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2005 and is currently an Associate Professor in the School of Art, Architecture & Design at Indiana University.  His work has been exhibited at the Textile Museum in Washington, DC, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the Seattle Asian Art Museum and has been recognized with a 2012 United States Artists Fellowship.
